This album is loosely based on witnessing my father’s descent into dementia. Around 2019 my father started to show signs of forgetfulness and confusion which slowly transformed into episodes of delusion, visions and strange behavior. Eventually he was diagnosed with dementia and so this album explores that experience as well as the concept of memory as a theme and how it shapes our idea of identity and reality.

About
Thief is a dark electronic band from Los Angeles and has been described as “Trent Reznor in coitus with an evil Björk in a haunted church”. Formed in 2016, Thief is the brainchild of Dylan Neal, a dulcimer player for the critically acclaimed experimental black metal band Botanist. During his time with Botanist, Neal began to experiment with a new sound. Deeply inspired by sacred vocal harmonics, Gregorian chants and the limitlessness of electronic music, he began to connect the dots between the new and ancient; the past and sonic expressions of the future. This involved crate digging for strange medieval hymns and melding them with electronic and dark electronic elements. To date, all of Thief is written, recorded, mixed and produced by Dylan where he resides in Los Angeles at a Buddhist temple.
Thief released their debut album Thieves Hymn in D Minor on October 27, 2016 via Lay Bare Recordings after the album fell into the hands of Désirée Hanssen who was eager to do a limited vinyl pressing. Soon after, Dylan recruited Robert Chaing (also of Botanist) to play drums live along with Chris Hackman on bass duties and began touring.
In 2019 Thief signed with Prophecy Productions after being seen by Prophecy founder Martin Koller and released their sophomore album Map of Lost Keys on July 26, 2019, embarking soon after on their first full US tour with Silence in the Snow. Map of Lost Keys was met with wide acclaim with Decibel magazine calling it the “most under-appreciated record of the year” (Daniel Lake).
During their US tour Dylan became inspired by the more aggresive live energy that Thief was developing during their live performances and so began to write their next album, The 16 Deaths of My Master, to embody that and used it as a platform to explore his past with addictions and misanthropic mysticism. It was released on August 27th, 2021 via Prophecy Productions and was features widely in outlets like Vice, Decibel Magazine, Bandcamp, Metal Injection, Cvlt Nation, Brooklyn Vegan and many more.
Thief’s next album, Bleed, Memory, is scheduled to be released on April 19th, 2024 via Prophecy Productions.
